On order, the 201st Base Support Battalion
deploys to provide direct support logistics, maintenance, and combat health support
to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team (BCT) and other divisional units located in the brigade
support area (BSA).
Constituted 17 December 1917 in the
Regular Army as the 8th Sanitary Train and assigned to the 8th Division. Organized
23 January 1918 at Camp Fremont, California. Demobilized 15 February 1919 at Camp
Lee, Virginia. Reconstituted 24 March 1923 in the Regular Army as the 8th Medical
Regiment and assigned to the 8th Division. Redesignated 2 October 1939 as the 8th
Medical Battalion. Activated 23 October 1939 at Fort Hoyle, Maryland. Redesignated
1 July 1940 as the 1st Medical Battalion; concurrently relieved from assignment
to the 8th Division and assigned to the 1st Division (later redesignated as the
1st Infantry Division). Inactivated 15 May 1985 at Fort Riley, Kansas. Converted
and redesignated 1 May 1987 as the 201st Support Battalion and activated at Fort
Riley, Kansas as an element of the 1st Infantry Division.
The 201st Foward Support
Battalion reactivated in Vilseck in 1996, and since then, they successfully deployed
to Bosnia in 1997 and to Kosovo in 1999 and again in 2002. In 2003, elements
of the battalion deployed with TF1-63 Armor in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom,
and the entire battalion deployed again in 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom
II. The battalion was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation for actions
in the Diyala Province, An Najaf, Mosul, and Fallujah.
The 201ST Base Support Battalion
was reassigned under First Infantry Division, with stationing at Fort Hood Texas,
effective April 19, 2007. In
June 2008, the unit deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom - Afghanistan.
Now redeployed, the unit will be stationing at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Fall 2009.
