Chief of Staff COL Brandon "Bull" Smith

1st Infantry Division Chief of Staff

COL Brandon Smith was born and raised in Danville, Virginia. He is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute with a Bachelor of Arts degree History and received his commission through ROTC in 1996.

COL Smith started his career as a tank platoon leader. He has since served as Company Executive Officer, Battalion Maintenance Officer, Tank Company and HHC Commander, BOLC instructor and BOLC Commander. He has served as Battalion Operations Officer, Squadron Executive Officer, and Brigade Operations Officer. Worked in the TRADOC Commanders Initiatives group, served as a Squadron commander, NATO Corps G3, Brigade Commander, and most recently Division Chief of Staff.

His previous assignments include 1st Battalion, 72nd Armor; 1st Armor Training Brigade; 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division; 3rd Battalion, 8th Calvary; 11th Infantry Training Brigade; 8th Squadron, 1st Cavalry; 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade; TRADOC HQs; 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry; NRDC-Turkey; 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division; and 1st Infantry Division HQs.

COL Smith’s military education includes Armor Officer Basic Course, Armor Officer Advance Course, and Cavalry Leaders Course. A Master degree in Strategic Studies from the Naval War College and a Master degree in Military Studies from the Army War College.

His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and the Combat Action Badge.

COL Smith is married to Mrs. Lynda Smith and has two children: Tatom (18) and Norah (13)
