Colonel Gregory W. McLean was commissioned as an Armor officer in 2001 at Officer Candidate School after three years prior service as a 19K Armor Crewmen with the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Carson, Colorado. After completion of the Armor Officer Basic Course he was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas. After completion of the Armor Advanced Course COL McLean commanded F Troop and Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 2nd Squadron, 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Hood, Texas.
COL McLean’s later command assignments include Brigade Commander of 194th
Armored Brigade, Fort Benning, Georgia. His Squadron Command was at 2nd Squadron, 13th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.
His key staff assignments include Senior Cavalry Trainer for Europe, at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center, Hohenfels, Germany. Lead Maneuver Planner for 1st Cavalry Division; 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment Operations Officer; and Brigade Executive Officer for 1st Brigade Combat Team (Ironhorse), 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; Chief of Inspections, CENTCOM Inspector General, MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Florida.
COL McLean’s most recent assignment was at Fort Eustis, Virginia serving as the Executive Officer to the Commanding General of TRADOC.
Colonel McLean holds a Bachelor of Political Science from Kansas State University, a Master of Military Arts and Sciences degree from the School of Advanced Military Studies and a Master’s in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. He has been married to Jacque since 2001 and they have two sons and one daughter: Gunnar (21), Colt (18) and Grier (16).
