Juneteenth 2023
The Juneteenth National Independence Day officially became the eleventh federal holiday in 2021 and is the first new federal holiday since the recognition of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday in 1983. Juneteenth recognizes the end of slavery and extended to Black Americans the nation’s promise of freedom and liberty. The Army played a fundamental role in securing the freedoms of 250,000 Black slaves in Texas when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery.

June is a significant month for the 1st Infantry Division and the Army
Earlier this month our Division Command Team traveled to Normandy, France with a group of hand-selected noncommissioned officers for the 79th Anniversary of D-Day. While there, the group participated in numerous events, to include ceremonies at the 1st Infantry Division Memorial and the Charles Shay Indian Memorial. The Big Red One also celebrated its 106th birthday before holding ‘Victory Week’ and the 248th Army birthday celebration where the winning cake made by Catigny Warrior Restaurant was cut. Victory Week promotes a culture of victory by connecting the division’s historic past to the present and includes events and competitions for Soldiers and families of the 1st Infantry Division, Big Red One veterans, and distinguished members of the Flint Hills community. Congratulations to Dagger Brigade for winning the Commander’s Cup!
